ABSTRACT
The large eddy simulation (LES) approach is considered as a successful well-known approach
for solving turbulent flow motion. This approach depends on using a spatial mathematical
filtering operation of the governing differential flow equations. For the case of using nonuniform
filter width, a mathematical error appears in the resulting equations; this error is
called the commutation error.A procedure for calculating the commutation error of the
filtering and the differentiation operations is developed based on Fourier transformation. This
developed procedure is used to define the main factors affecting the control of the
commutation error.
