ABSTRACT

2-D elastic-plastic finite element analysis was utilized to simulate cyclic crack tip deformation of

short cracks emanating from elliptical oblique notches. The analysis was carried out on a single

edge notch plate under constant amplitude loading at zero stress-ratio. Different notch geometries

were tested in this investigation. The extents of monotonic and cyclic crack tip plastically

deformed zone and near tip-relative displacement were of interest during crack extension. Both

Stationary and artificially advancing cracks from the elliptical oblique edge notch were analysed

and compared in terms of plastically deformed zones and crack tip relative displacement. PVC

plates having the same edge elliptical oblique edge notches were tested experimentally under

static loading to show the shape of plastic deformation and site of crack initiation on the notch

surface.
