Abstract.
In the present paper the rheological characteristics of coal-water slurry (CWS) were
investigated. The studied factors included the effect of particle size and solid concentrations.
The power-law model was applied to determine the non-Newtonian properties using a
Chandler Engineering viscometer Model 3500LS+ (rotational viscometer) at shear rates from
0.1 to 600 S-1. The results showed that the slurry exhibited shear thinning, i.e. pseudoplasticbehaviour in the range of 0.1-600 S-1 shear rate. The degree of pseudoplasticity increased with
the decrease in mean particle size and with the increase of coal content. At low solid
concentrations the slurry may be considered as a Newtonian fluid.
