ABSTRACT

During the last three decades, different regions of Nile embankments passing through

Meet AbuGhaleb – Domitta governorate, AbuSeer Bana village – Elgarbia governorate,

ElKatta village – Giza governorate, and Salam village – Asuyt governorate are

exposed to deterioration with time, consequently the factor of safety against sliding is

decreasing until reaching to unstable state. The factors affecting on the stability of Nile

embankment such as bank geometry, material properties, scouring, wave action, and

exposing to additional load are investigated. In this study, field and laboratory testing

programs are established and executed to specify the required soil engineering

properties. A numerical model is utilized to study the stability of Nile embankments

against sliding under the above mentioned actions. The stability of the embankment

with its actual condition is examined and it reveals the critical stability factor. The

embankment is strengthened with graded dolomite stones mass underlined by natural

soil filter. The result shows that, this strengthens block upgrade the stability factors of

embankment against sliding. Recommendations of the precautions to deal with these

regions in the future are also introduced.
