NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS REMOVAL USING UASB-SBR REACTORS

ABSTRACT

The results from pilot scale UASB-SBR system for municipal wastewater treatment carried

out for about eight months for testing the efficiency of this system in nitrogen, phosphorus

removal under different operation conditions. Retention time in UASB varied from 4 hr to 3

hr while aeration time cycle in SBR, varied from 2.5, 5&9 hrs respectively. Results indicated

that Ammonia Nitrogen and total kjeldahl removal depend on aeration time in (SBR).

Complete nitrification of ammonia took place when aeration time was more than 5 hours, and

removal of TKN about 55.6%, 61.8% and 80% for 1st , 2nd and 3rd runs respectively.

Removal percent of phosphorus was 65% and did not have significant change with increasing

aeration time till 9 hrs.
