EFFECT OF AIR CURTAIN ON TEMPERATURE AND VELOCITY DISTRIBUTIONS INSIDE A LARGE SPACE

ABSTRACT

A numerical study on airflow inside a large space with door opening, with and without

interaction air curtain was carried in this paper. The low Reynolds k-ε equation turbulent

model is used to capture the fluid flow and heat transfer in the space and through the opening.

The pattern of the air flow and temperature distributions is totally changed when the air

curtain was installed and temperature stratification will destroy. However,although it provides

good energy conservation it also produces significantly higher air velocity (especially near the

entrance) that can discomfort due to draft. The result from this work shows that (CFD)

calculation can be used for simulating the airflow in the space as well as air curtain and the

instillation of air curtain above the door opening reduce the average room temperature about

2 oC comparing with door opening without air curtain.
